What makes a person photogenic?

I know what being photogenic is, but what makes people that way? I think I look pretty good, but in pictures I always look weird in some way or another.

Even people who aren't really confident photograph well if they can act confident, usually by imagining a fantasy situation while they pose.

A situation I have couples imagine sometimes is that they have just won a national dance competition, and have been asked to come back onstage and give a slow demonstration dance. I have them pose in dance positions rather than actually dancing, looking at the camera sometimes and looking at each other sometimes, etc. This often works even with people who swear they can't dance at all. But they don't feel anxious because I'm not asking them to actually dance. When they get into the fantasy the results can be amazing.

A willingness to try new things also helps a lot.
