Question:

What can I do to show my teacher I am ready for pointe?

I've been taking ballet my whole life and took pointe for a year (a couple years ago) but then I had to move and my new studio only lets people who are in company do pointe and you have to be at dance everyday which is great for people whos whole life is dance, but I'm involved at school too. I'm going to be a freshman and I take ballet classes with company girls who are juniors and seniors. I'm hoping my teacher will see that I'm ready, but how could I change her stubborn mind from thinking that only company girls can be on pointe! Also what should I do to be completely ready. Please help!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: How long it will take you to get en pointe depends on several factors. Your feet and ankles have to be strong enough to support you. Your ballet technique has to be solid. And your commitment has to be strong (even if you aren't there everyday). Your teacher will consider all these things before allowing you to start. Some girls will progress faster due to natural talent and hard work. It is definitely an individual thing.

If you work hard enough and improve to your teachers satisfaction it may just take this next year. I would also talk to her briefly about it first just so its fresh in her mind and she might start evaluating you more closely. I'm assuming you are taking a company ballet class because they are there everyday for all different kinds of dance so maybe you could tell your teacher that while the company students are there everyday dancing all types of dance you are specifically committed to ballet.

Start doing exercises focused on your toes and ankles such as going on releve often, seriously anytime, while brushing your teeth getting ready for school, anytime you think about it. Also just pointe your feet at random times, while watching tv or in your bed. Or mimic exercises you do during ballet, at home. I really hope this advise helps. Just stay positive, confident, and keep working on ballet. Best of luck!!!
