Question:

Where can I see a dance performance in NY like So You Think You Can Dance?

I really like the pop culture, entertainment-value focused dancing on So You Think You Can Dance. I'm not a huge fan of some of the more artsy dance performances around Lincoln Center though. Is there anywhere I can go in New York to see the fun style of dancing they show on TV?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You need to bookmark Dance/NYC's web site and make regular use of their calendar page. You just missed one HECK of a FREE concert, "Solstice in Times Square/ Dancing at the Crossroads." Check out their web site:
http://www.dradance.org/events/solstice2...
I found this even through the Dance/NYC page:
http://www.dancenyc.org/dance.asp...

That page shows that in June, alone, you could see flamenco, tango, Savion Glover, and even a 1 on 1 Poppin Dance Battle at the Boogie Nation event, not to mention all the other "entertainment-value focused" dancing that you think is too artsy.

Have you even seen MOMIX with their illusions or aerial work? Or how about Ballet Deviare that mixes ballet with heavy metal? If you liked the piece that Sara and Jesus did for the first performance show - the one choreographed by Wade Robson that had them looking like 1930's vagabonds and started with them holding newspapers - then you really should give more of the NYC "artsy" dance scene a chance. You just need to pay more attention to the reviews and advance publicity of shows in your local paper. For example, check out this review of the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company from the Village Voice:
