Question:

Where did the quickstep originate?

I'm doing a report on ballroom dancing and I wondered where the quickstep originated

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In the 1920's, it was normal for foxtrot to be played at around 40 bars per minute, or even faster, and routine foxtrot patterns included lock-steps and other patterns that are now done in quickstep but not foxtrot. In the middle of that decade came the Charleston craze, and the more genteel places had to put up "PCQ" (please Charleston quietly) signs to keep the damage to a minimum. As foxtrot slowed in ballrooms and it was amalgamated with Charleston in social dancing, the ballroom committee of the ISTD formalized the Quick Step Foxtrot and Charleston, which later became shortened to Quickstep. Call it London for formality.
