Question:

Caricature tips?

I want to start drawing caricatures for fun. Does anyone have any good tips or a website with hints?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are a few defining things about the way people look that make the very unique, eg. the shape of their face, hairstyles, small eyes, big nose etc etc.

The trick with caricatures is to really exaggerate these kinds of things... like for example, Madonna has a small gap between her two front teeth - make it really wide. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a really solid jawline - make it outrageously square and solid!

Another thing that makes a good caricature is to also capture the person's personality, or capture the person doing something they are notorious for.

Have a friend who's a skater? Make sure he's got a board in his hand or the background is set in a park. Those kinds of things can really add to the 'excitement' of the image.

And a little 'cheaters' tip if you're good with photo editing programs: scan in a photo of the person and examine it to see their distinguishing features. Then grab the smudge tool or something like that, and play with those features (if they have big eyes, make them bigger etc). and then draw it from that.

That should help you visualise the person as more of a cartoon character than an actual person... if that helps! :)
