Question:

I have a book to publish - why do I need a literary agent?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Agents know the editors at publishing houses, and they know how to negotiate contracts and protect YOUR rights. The large houses almost universally will not look at unagented material. If you are only interested in going with a small press, then you might be able to avoid the agent route but you could be missing out on that great deal.

Agents will also make sure you have the best possible contract. Unless you are a lawyer that specializes in publishing law, I would NOT recommed that you go at this alone. So you can either find an agent who will be your champion, or pay an attorney out of pocket to review your contract.
