Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: According to recent research, the Salem witch trials occurred because the some of the rye that was being grown locally had a fungus that causes halucinations (it is much the same as LSD). The people making the accusations were those growing and eating the affected rye bread.

I also seem to remember that the people who eventually confessed to their witchcraft were not executed, but those who were found guilty but would not confess were hanged.
