Various parishes would try and prove they were more devout than their neighbours ("our church is better than yours!") and there was big money in it. The scene in "Robin Hood, Prince of thieves" when Robin first meets Friar Tuck is actually quite accurate, there were priests selling indulgences and relics to the pilgrims.
