Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: When I was about 13 or so, I got into the Sherlock Holmes stories. They might seem old fashioned, but they're really timeless classics. Very well thought out and give you a historical picture from the time they were written, as well. Try Hound of the Baskervilles to start. You might also like the Edgar Allan Poe mysteries. Pretty creepy for their time, but fairly mild by today's standards. When I was even younger I read all the Nancy Drew mysteries, but they seem pretty out-dated now.

I read a lot of mysteries, but some might be too "old" for you. But you could visit the library and have a look for yourself at some of these:

Tony Hillerman - main characters are Navajo Indian police officers, incredible stories, very modern.
Elizabeth Peters - Amelia Peabody series - Peabody is a female archealogist in Egypt around the early 1900's, pretty humorous as well as unusual story lines
Lynda S. Robinson - set in actual ancient Egypt, very interesting if you like that time period.
Dorothy Gilman - Mrs. Pollifax series. Mrs. P is a bored older lady who gets mistaken for a CIA agent! Hysterically funny.
Baroness Orczy - The Scarlet Pimpernel. Old, but I just read it to my 11-year-old daughter, and she loved it. Very cleverly done.
Orson Scott Card - in the sci fi category but it's a bit of a mystery as well - Ender's Game - one of the best books I've ever read!

And I know you said you aren't interested in the girls crushing on boys stuff, but I still have to recommend Louise Rennison's series about Georgia Nicolson. Georgia is a 14-year-old British girl writing in her diary, and you have never read anything so funny in all your life. Nearly every page makes me laugh out loud - as Georgia would say, I'm laughing like a loon on loon tablets! You won't regret reading those, I promise!
