Children's story about a cat holding rings on her tail...?

Does anyone remember a story about a princess who had so many rings on her fingers she couldn't go swimming, so she put all her rings on her cats tail and bent it at the end so that the rings didn't fall off? Suposedly it is the reason why cats have a crook at the end of their tail. My mother doesn't remember reading this to me and I'd love to show it to her.
