Question:

Who loves the British Empire?

I am British, and nationalist, I love my country, particularly its History, it must be the most varied history ever. However, people say "The worst thing of the past few centuries is the British Empire". This is wrong. I am not ashamed of ANY part of the Empire, whether it be colonization or the slave trade. I am NOT advocating it now, but I am not ashamed of it in the past, and I certainly hate those who believe we should apologize for it. I want to know what others think. Anyone without CORRECT knowledge about the empire, don't bother to answer.

Elvis Costello, are you really THE Elvis Costello. I dont imagine so, but I love Oliver's Army, just overtaken Starman as my favourite song atm. The Irish massacres were brutal, but I will not apologize for it. However, I do feel for you.

Sorry, just saw that you were talking about Virginia massacres, I got overexcited. I was not aware of them, but the relationship Britain and the USA share has only come about due to the respect for eachother back in the 1800's, when both were superpowers. Unfortuneately, my country has now become a joke, leaving us well below the USA in industry, economy and socially. I do not always see eye to eye with Americans, but I have a great deal of respect for them.

Very well, I will not apologize, and frankly, without the slave trade, you would not live in such avid luxury as you do now. I can see you believe it had a "horrible" impact. As I said, I only wanted people who knew what they were talking about to answer. Remember, Britian was an island at the time, a tiny country off Europe, and, with European power growing, it was kill or be killed. The Empire had to be created, or Britian certainly would've fallen to other powers. Never forget, without Britian, America would neither exist, nor have such a lucrative backdrop for its citizens. It provided huge amounts of trade after its revolution, boosting America's income, and ensuring it's people could feel the positive effects even today. So, I wish to defend ALL acts committed, and will not apologize for any of it.
