Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Because in many ways most of them were smarter than we are. They knew it was no worse than alcohol and really not harmful at all. And their governments didn't tell them it was terrible and would make them kill babies if they smoked it so they enjoyed it and had no problems with it. Even treating it as a spiritual thing. Now people are stupid and don't think for themselves and they are told to look down upon it because it's evil and since the government said it it must be right.
