Post offices in India play a vital role in the rural areas. They connect these rural areas with the rest of the country and also provide banking facilities in the absence of banks in the rural areas. On an average in India, a post office serves an area of 21.10 sq km, and a population of 6609.

Indian Post also offers financial services, Life Insurance, and International mail services, making it one of the main organs of Indian rural life line, since India is a country of villages.
