Question:

Can I become a cheerleader in high school?

I've been dancing my whole life so I have that down, but I can't do back handsprings or anything like that. I'm going to be a freshman and the cheer and dance team are combined and I think cheer would be fun, do you think I'd have to have experience in cheer to make the team. Any advice on what I should do now or with the tryouts?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Ask the coach if tumbling is required, if yes or if you want to anyway, take tumbling lessons.

Dancers, unless they are pom squad, tend to be very fluid and loose in their movements. In cheer we are very tight and wait until the last moment to change positions. I would say you might want to make sure you can snap your moves cleanly.

Also, cheer jumps are not all the same as dance leaps and jumps, so check into those and see if you can do them.

I imagine you are very flexible but keep on stretching anyway. You need to retain that flexibility for cheer.
