Question:

I am looking for anyone related to the Grant family in Amarillo TX.?

Originally from Scotland, then Pennsylvania? then Oklahoma, then Texas. According to family lore my ancestors participated in the Boston Tea Party and possibly related to Ulysses S. Grant. Any info will be appreciated.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The best info/advice that I have for you, is to turn the direction of your research around. In other words.. you "work" the most recent first (ie those in Amarillo, or Texas.. who you can PROVE to be related). Your wording on the family lore leads me to think that the tradition as such starts with what they believe to be the origin in Scotland. The standard operating procedure works from present back.. each generation that you work back, you define the exact ancestor, and who his/her children, siblings and parents were.
At the point in time where you have worked back 3 or 4 generations, and are familiar with specific names and locations, you can drop by one of several surname focus boards (like www.genforum.com). Each generation back increases the numerical odds of stumbling onto related persons, who might have solid records to share with you. Also, when you have documented names and places back in the 1700's or 1800's, you stand a much better chance to then pull up a file concerning Ulysses's lineage and relatives... to see if you have a relative in common.
