Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You could try writing nonfiction. It's much easier to sell, you don't have to be an expert to do it and the pay is generally better for a first time author. Nonfiction also tends to sell more easily and much better than fiction. There are many, many nonfiction books that have sold more than 100k copies, usually a well written one can easily sell 20k-40k. Just a few of the unusual examples are, How to Live with a Neurotic Dog (60k copies sold), Woe is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English (60k copies sold), The Quotable Star Wars (63k copies sold), Worms Eat My Garbage--a self published book on composting (100k copies sold). As you can see, nonfiction sells, even when it's a rather strange, unusual or seemingly unsellable topic.

Think of all of the skills you have, hobbies you enjoy or things you might be able to teach others. You don't even have to possess the skills/knowledge to begin with, you can do the research as you're writing your book. It can be anything from a cook book to parenting tips and anything else that people might be interested in.

If you *really* want to write fiction, I still suggest writing a nonfiction book or two first. First of all, it'll improve your writing and grammar skills (should you need some polishing up in that area) and second, if your book sells well, you'll have a good bit of royalties coming in from book sales which will allow you to devote more time to your fiction novel without having to go out and get a full time job to support yourself.

If you're interested in writing nonfiction, I suggest you get a copy of "Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?" from Amazon.com. It's pretty much a step by step guide to writing nonfiction, from getting the idea to doing the research to finding a publisher. Well worth the $15 it costs.

Good luck!
