I read a book when I was a kid but can't remember the title.?

When I was in 5th or 6th grade 1982-1983, I read a series of fictional books about a really smart boy. He may even have been a genius. I want to say his name was Tom but I could be way off base. I don't remember any specifics about any of the stories except one. He had a horse that was really fast at running but only for a quarter-mile. The horse would get really tired after that quarter-mile. Another kid challenged his horse to a mile race. The smart kid accepted. During the race, the smart kid would get really far ahead after each quarter mile and then rest his horse until the other kid caught up. He did this every quarter-mile until the end of the mile and subsequently won the race.

I believe this was a fictional series. Does anyone know this series?
