Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix question?

What I didn't get was when the DA went into the Department of Mysteries, what was that like curtain about? Where Harry hears mumbling in some kind of curtain. I was SO confused in that chapter. More details was like when Harry was inside and he sees some kind of entrance, but when he lifts the curtain, there is nothing? And also, he hears some mumbling of voices, and he asks people if it was them but they all say they didn't say anything. Or am I just imagining this part. But I SWEAR! I remember this part! Please help!
