Question:

What are some good heroines in literature?

They don't have to be classics, just any novels or short stories that people know of with females as the lead characters. I'm looking more for the introverted types, not the extroverted, wow-she's-got-balls sort. lol (Basically, I'm looking for some that are more like me! :-) ) Just girls that are struggling with things. No Hollywood ball-buster types please...just real girls.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Antigone from the play, Antigone is a pretty great heroine. This is an old greek play that i read in school and didnt really like very much, but I really liked Antigone. In the story, she is trying to bury her brother who was killed in battle against the king's orders. Women were not taken seriously at this time and she really stood up for the female race.

Ellen and Aliena from The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet are both strong and willful characters set in a time period where, again, women were not taken seriously. These two form their own paths and their own futures. They fight for themselves and do not give up to superior forces.

Another one of Ken Follett's books, Jackdaws, provides a women who leads the French Resistance against the German occupants during World War II. After a few failures, she gears up a group of French women resistance workers and completes an operation that would have proved D-Day impossible if it hadnt been a success.
