Question:

Why do people overlook tribal warfare?

Here are a few examples...

"The native people would be living in relative peace." -on this forum I forgot the guys name

"Natives never disgraced eachother by destroying villages." -said by a anthro student at college

"Indians lived in harmony with eachother and with nature." -a paraphrase of something I get alot

I just wonder how they can overlook intertribal war in North America and Central America for that matter. The Iroquois built a society around war. According to Pretty Shield (a crow medicine women born sometime in the 1840's or 50's) the Crow were constantly at war with the Lakota, and Cheyenne. The Aztecs subjegated other tribes by military force alone, and even instigated revolts in order to have an excuse to capture members of other tribes for sacrifices.

Another graphic example of what I see ignored is the destruction and massacre of the Illinois at the hands of the Iroquis confederacy, not ot mention the total destruction of several Huron villages.

If it sounds like I'm picking on the Iroquis (Haudenenausee) it's because I read a lot of first hand accounts from French missionaries, traders and explorers so my specifics are limited to the Great Lakes area.
