I have been told by former Bundswehr gruppen soldiers that the pride is intact, but the gap in history is maintained.

my father's brothers were SS, and privately were proud of their service to the Fatherland...none of their units were involved in any of the Final solution activities; they considered themselves to be elite soldiers involved in protecting the Fatherland, and nothing more. One of my uncles told me that they didn't consort much with the Gestapo or the Totenkopf groups, as they were just too radical to safely be friendly with...
