Position:Home>Arts & Humanities> What type of dance shoes?

Question:

What type of dance shoes?

I have been getting into a lot of musical theater dance shows etc and going to be taking a class at my school for modern and was wondering what the best type of dancing shoe would be (mainly for musical theater)...also are shoes necessary?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Joey, not sure if you are a girl or boy. So I'll tell you both.

For musical theatre, a girl will wear black, sometimes tan, character shoes. These have a 1/12 to 2 inch heel. They are like heeled tap shoes without the taps. A boy would wear black jazz shoes. You may be able to use black dance sneakers depending on what the director wants with the costuming.

For a modern dance class, some teachers are picky about the shoes. I would ask first before buying shoes. Most modern classes will be bare feet. Which usually means that dance paws or foot undies are allowed. These are a half sock thing that your toes go through and they have a leather pad that goes under the ball of your foot to help you turn.
Sometimes, you will find jazz shoes or ballet shoes worn in modern, depends on the teacher's preference.

All of these shoes can be found at a local dance shop or purchased online:
