Question:

Pre-pointe?

I have taken beginning ballet for teens for 3+ months and want to be on pointe. My studio is offering a pre-point class. The last day of class, the studio was closed so i never got to ask my teacher so:

Do you think i should take this class?
Would I have to get demi-point shoes or other shoes?
Any advice?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I would wait a while until you have a good understanding of the basics of ballet, or you won't know what you're doing in demi-pointe and pointe classes. You should have about 3 years of ballet under your belt before you move on to anything difficult. Depending on how old you are, you might not have to have that long of preparation.

Also, it's not really your choice to decide on whether or not you are ready for pointe. It's not just a "I think I can take up the challenge". Your teacher will TELL you when you are ready for pointe and pre-pointe.

I'm not teaching you, so I can't say whether or not to take this class. If you can call your teacher and see if she says it's a good idea, I would.

You will have to get demi-pointe shoes and work from there. You're going to want to get those fitted like you will want to get your pointe shoes fitted.

Possible reasons your teacher has not said you can start pre-pointe are:
- Your lack of ballet experience (and possibly lack of skill, sorry)
- Your Age
- Weak ankles and muscles or small arch
- Improper placement

If you can work on those things either in the demi-pointe classes or when working to get to those classes, you'll be better off.

Good luck!
