Where did the Orchestra Pit Originate?

I'm putting together an English paper and was looking for references on orchestra pit's. Specifically where the first one was, who designed the concept ect....

If I am way off base and orchestra pit's are as old as the performances that today make use of them then just let me know so I can stop looking.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In ancient Rome, they used a "raked" stage. Higher in the back and lower in the front so the audience, who were standing all on the same flat level below, could see. perhaps the orchestra "pit" came around in those days?
