Can anyone help me find a book I read when I was a kid?

When I was a kid I read this book about a time after all the adults had died from some strange disease. All the children under the age of 12 had to start their own new civilization. It was a very serious book, and very good. I cannot for the life of me remember what the book was called, but I'm sure I can't be the only one who read it.

Any ideas?

No it wasn't Lord of the Flies. The book took place in suburbia, not an island.
