Question:

Spray Paint Textures and Techniques?

I bought plastic spray paint, and I bought a bunch of colours including gold and silver. I'm spray painting a little plastic gun for use in a film I'm making with a bunch of friends. I want to make the guns have a rough metallic texture, with some fading and scratched metal and what not, is there a site or can someone tell me how? Do I need anything specific?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: it would probably be best to use the silver it would look more natural.i would give it a couple of coats to make it look more rough too.if you do one coat on plastic it will look to new and shiny.give it one coat then wait for it to dry then give it another maybe even a 3rd.also a good way would be to get a dark grey or a black and after you have finished with the silver maybe stencil of a couple of parts (for shading)i.e the barrel and from say from 10 inches away spray it with the grey or black.dont hold the can too close or you will cover it too much with the colour and ruin the effect.you only want to give it a slight shading therefore making it look more real. Also when you shade it dont keep your finger on the nozzle spraying.you only want to press down for less than one second each time but do this as many times as it takes until you are happy with the effect.remember keep the can at a distance. After the whole thing is dry you can to start to make small scratches on it using a razor but dont over do it.After all this is done it should look more real and not like a brand new shiny gun.If you need to mask any of it off (maybe the handle)do this well after it is dry or the paint will stick to it and when you take it off it will look bad.Just remember when shading quick short bursts.keep it simple dont use too many colours or it will not look real.good luck.
