Why isn't Virginia the first state?

Question:

Why isn't Virginia the first state?

Jamestown, Virginia was the first established English colony, and 13 years later the Pilgrims came to Deleware or something. And now Deleware is the 1st state and Virginia is like.. the 10th. Whats up with that?
