Question:

Are all emotions intentional or object-directed?

Is it possible to have an emotion that is not directed toward some object?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are many conscious experiences that could be generally labeled as emotions which are not directed twoard an object.

The most obvious example is Depression or Ennui. It seems clear that generalized depression has no specific "object" but is rather a sort of transient disposition of an organism.

And what about an emotion that is caused by a mistake? Say someone is camping in a tent in a strange place and they awake from sleep afraid because they believe they have heard a bear digging through their cooler. However, it turns out that the noise was merely a neighboring camper. The fear then had no external object, and was rather caused by a mistaken belief. Would this be an example of intentional emotion?
