Question:

What really makes teens tick, what really made being yourself or intelligent frowned upon?

Im 15, and I am a bit confused. Kids where I am are very groupy and reject certant kinds of people, yet they always say "Be yourself!" to make themselves look good. They hate Bush for no reason other then what they hear on TV. I dont really think he is a great president, but god, get some new material. They wear clothes that are 3 times more expensive then regular ones, and if you do not adhere to a particular style you are an outcast. People who use their minds are nerds, people who don't wear certant things are outcasts, people who are emotional and are in touch with feelings, emos, people who are dark are goths. People who wear nice clothes are preps. People who act tough and are show offs are jocks. So many groups, yet being yourself and not accepting the general rules of society is frowned upon. Most of my classmates don't care about world issues, or polotics, or philosophy, they just text each other all day. I am not popular, but im not an outcast either. Why are we like this?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My friend, it sounds we are in the same boat. Though generally your 3-4 years younger than I am.

I just think that kids these days have made a mockery of 'be your self' they don't really believe it, but its also something they hear all the time. Most likely they believe they are their selves, so that the line 'be your self' is no longer effective. Like a out dated calculator, it's use is limited..

I think that all these groupings is like a structure, with out it, the world of teens would be in chaos.. Even in the adult world from my observation have these similar groupings..

But its more complicated, because you'll have middle class(okay well of people, who also struggling), lower classes(dirt poor people), Upper class( very well off people, who are mildly struggling.) and then the richer people.. With privacy problems. But with each section people divide them selves into groups like people did in school.

Honestly, I think its just human nature for people to pair off into groups who they feel relate to better. As well as feeling superior than a particular group.

Hm as I probably pointed out, its a structure I feel people would feel lost with out.
