Question:

What exactly is "social acceptance" and is it a vital neccessity?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Humans are social creatures. We cannot live in isolation, without the assistance and support of the community. Even a hermit has basic gear provided by humankind.
If society rejects you, your deepest psychological need to belong to your tribe of humans is not being met, and at a subconscious level, you interpret this as a threat to your survival. In many societies today, social rejection still is a literal threat to your physical survival. For example, certain groups in Africa who are banned from using the village well because they are outcasts very likely cannot survive.
In the US, we can always get by physically, but the emotional drive for acceptance is still very real.
