Question:

Does buying a film camera make sense anymore?

Why spend $300 on a film camera and lens, when you get a decent digital camera for that price.

For people learning photography, wouldn't a digital camera be more effective? Considering all the advantages and disadvantages, I think buying a digital camera makes a whole lot more sense.

Agree or disagree?

Traditionally, student would start with chromes (slides) - after B/W. But given that (a) slides are expensive (b) slides are getting harder and harder to get processed (c) digital is more immediate (d) digital leads to more experimentation, I would say digital is the student's best friend.

I've gave some people personal photography lessons. But in the days of film, I would have to show pictures and then send them out. But now with digital, the can experiment right there and see what they are suppose to do.

The only "negative" about going digital is that there's very little "pondering" time. Students see a lesson, try it out, then move on. So there no time for the lesson to SINK IN. So I would recommend "self assignment" where a student choose just one aspect of photography and concentrate on that for days or even a week or two.

For the people who disagree, I remember some people saying that everybody should learn to type on a typewriter first (instead of learning on a computer). It will make people concentrate harder so they don't make mistakes as much. Sound kind of crazy now, doesn't it. So I would say to them (film fans), re-examine your perspective before you sound like a broken type-writer. (just kidding).
