Alone

I had an Angel once
He saved me when I was alone
He sat beside me in my winter
Until I placed him on a throne
so he was too high

I had some patience once
To sleep until the morning light
But the Moon then told me not to
And I guess I thought that she was right
so I woke up in the dark

I had some dreams once
Dreams that gave me time to smile
But they left to find a better home
Going east to reach the Nile
or some other sacred river

I had lots of things once
I kept them close- they dried my tears
But I must have lost them on the way
Or they just ran from all my fears
and so they??re gone

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: This poem is beautifully written and beautifully structured. It is certainly at professional level, and I feel I could quote from almost any stanza and find a rounded thought process which leads me on to wonder and want to know more. The last stanza is brilliantly brought to a conclusion.

I particularly like the way the poet, in the first stanza, has put the 'angel' on too high a pedestal, blaming self for the ultimate disillusionment - and knows the remaining comfort factors were lost through fear. Most poems printed here about being alone are maudling and self-pitying. This level of examination of situation and self-knowledge brings one to feel hope for any future relationships for this poet.
