Question:

Braddock Harriss, Sr married Rachel Hickerson?

The book The Story Uncle Minyard Told by Davis Blake Carter is told in story book fashion about the Harriss family's 200 year trek from Virginia to North Carolina, to South Carolina, to Georgia to Alabama and to Texas. Uncle Minyard was the youngest of 10 offsprings of my gggrandparents Braddock Harriss, Jr. and Avey Handley.

The book tells that Braddock, Jr.'s parents were Braddock Harriss Sr and Rachel Hickerson and gives a very amusing account of the romance between Braddock and Rachel. However, some of us can't find a documentation of the marriage between Braddock and Rachel. The book indicates they were married before or around 1790 in Wilkes County, N.C. One person sent an email to a distant Harris cousin stating he believed Braddock Sr. actually married Annie Lane and she was the mother of Braddock, Jr. I have put messages on the Wilkes County, N.C. message board trying to find out what churches were in Wilkes County at the time. Can anybody help?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Ah, Shirley, I can see you have a real challenge. I scanned what there is for the couple at rootsweb, including many files showing Rachel born about 1750 but kids born about 1807. That makes no sense. Other files seem to show Rachel's parents were blank Hickerson and blank Lytle. So ran that, and came up with Charles Hickerson and Mary/Mollie Lytle. The problem there is that none of the files confirm having a daughter Rachel. Another item was a posting at genforum... saying it is "said" Rachel was Braddock's wife, but he can find no proof to support it. Charles and Mary Hickerson WERE solidly in Wilkes county.
Honestly, Shirley... my suggestion would be the land records, in depth. For that time frame, I've found those to be the most reliable and best preserved.
