Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Sunne in Splendor by Sharon Kay Penman is an excellent historical fiction about the War of the Roses.

The Mists of Avalon is a great retelling of the King Arthur legend.

You should tackle Jane Austen - Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and especially Pride and Prejudice!

The Girl with the Pearl Earring is a wonderful imagining of what inspired Jan Vermeer to create his famous painting.

I also greatly enjoyed a book called Ruled Brittania by Harry Turtledove. He writes "alternate histories," which means he writes from the perspective that something different happened. In this book, he starts with the premise that King Philip of Spain ruled England and Elizabeth is imprisoned. William Shakespeare is approached about writing a play to stir the English people into rebelling against their Spanish captors. It's wonderful!!!
