Developing (shred) guitar technique?

I've been playing the electric guitar recreationally for 3 years, self taught, but I would like to learn to play much faster, as well as cleaner, such as Paul Gilbert, Satch, Vai, Malmsteen, Batio, etc.

I've already got alternate picking down to a T, and I've dabbled in sweep picking, but everytime I try playing something fast, even if I increase speen gradually, I screw up. A lot.

How can I improve my technique so it stops hindering progress?
