Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: As a result of the Spanish American War of 1898 the US of A emerged as a World Power and aside from Hawai'i, now had territories outside of the continental boundaries of the Americas. America bannished the Ghosts of its own not So Civil War by working together North & South as one Nation in a struggle that was defined as a fight for the Liberation of the Cuban People. The General in Command in the Cuban Campaign was a Sotherner.

America also emerged as a Naval power - - - not merely might but by virtue of masterng the art of communication. The telegraph played an important part in the conduct of a war. America's leadership was also shown to be effective - - - William McKinley set an example for Wilson and FDR.

And America found itself dealing with issues about racism and ethnicity. America was truly clueless when it came to the Phillipines and never quite figured out what to do with a volatile mix of Asian & Aboriginal people of strong atholic faith.

Also America 'aquirred' Purto Rico, which provided a ready supply of cheap exploitable labor.
