Question:

Acting with your voice?

Hey, I'm pretty much an amateur actor and I'm trying to learn better ways at acting. I'm currently working a lot on facial expressions and studying all the ones I have. But how can you make your voice fit you expressions. I have a more deep tone of voice then most guys not ridiculously bass deep though. And every time I look at myself act I can't help but hear my voice and say it doesn't fit my character at all. Is this just me and one of those cases where I'm listening to my own voice and saying that's not me? or is there really something that you need to do with your voice to fit your character? I'm not talking about accents, crazy pitches or singing, just the flow of my words.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I think you might try another approach. Rather than work on the externals, such as facial expressions, try to work on the character from the point of view of what he or she wants and what he or she is doing to get it.

In my experience, if I'm too involved with what I look or sound like, I'm not doing the job of the actor.

Try and avoid working with mirrors, for example. Working with mirrors tends to make the actor entirely too focused on himself. Remember, as Sanford Meisner once said, "Acting is always about the other guy."

Learn to listen, not to yourself, but to the other actors, the other characters.
