They are a type of cameras that lets you see exactly what the lens is aiming at in real time, through a complicated mechanism with mirrors and prisms. They usually also have interchangeable lenses. The most popular brands are Nikon, Canon, Minolta and Pentax. A good flash is also a must. The image sensors range between 8 to 16 mega pixels, way above most everyday cameras. Professional photographers in a studio sometimes use an even more advanced type of camera, known as a 48 mm DSLR. They have huge image sensors and go all the way up to 40 mp. They are very expensive and quite large, making them inconvenient outside a studio, but the image quality is superb. The most known brands are Haselblad and Mamiya.
